Last weekend I had the opportunity to see the touring production of "Hamilton" at Seattle's Paramount Theater. Seattle was the first stop on the tour for this cast, and they were spectacular!

This play really is amazing, and if you haven't seen it yet, you must at least get the cast recording. The score isn't just rap, there's hip hop, jazz, regular Broadway show tunes, and British invasion.

However, before the show, King George III stopped in front of the theater to enthuse about the show that stars him.

Hi, my name is Gina Wilhelm. I started acting when I was 5 years old, and I work on stage, musical theatre, film, and television.

I do voice overs and radio.

(I had my own radio show when I was 12 years old, and it was detailed in the National Geographic World magazine).

I am new to blogging, but you can find me on Facebook, and my voice page is here, and my acting page is here. Here is my resume.

I love acting because it makes me feel like I'm going somewhere and my life has meaning. I enjoy the energy that comes from being in front of an audience. I love the opportunity to portray characters very different from myself, because it is exciting. It's fun!

I am glad you found me. I hope you will hire me or come see one of my shows. Thank you very much!

This week marks the opening of "Hanako and the Cherry Tree (The Pitfalls of Mr. Yama)." This beautiful puppet show includes four different styles of puppetry.

This puppet play tells the stories of a miser who discovers a magical cherry tree on his property. When a young girl comes on his property, they form an unlikely friendship, and misfortunes ensue when he swallows a cherry pit.

This Japanese tall tale includes an oni and tengu (mythical goblins) and a giant serpent! It also explores the theme of tradition versus modern values.

I play Hanako, the little girl. This is particularly fun, as the last time I did this show five years ago, I played a completely different role.

All voices are performed live by me and fellow puppeteers Andre Nelson, Amy Escobar, and Zane Exactly. We use a variety of puppet styles including Japanese Bunraku-style, rod puppets, shadow puppets, and black light puppets to tell this story in the Rakugo traditions.

The script was adapted by Jean Enticknap. Jean also directed this lively production.

This show is recommended for ages 3 and up.

This play has laughs, scares, and magic galore! Don't miss our fun, beautiful show!

This
week marks the opening of "The Tales of Peter Rabbit." This is the
beautiful puppet show we just presented in tour in Atlanta, Georgia, now presented for our local audiences in Seattle!

This puppet play tells the stories of some of Beatrix Potter's most beloved characters. The main stories are those of Peter Rabbit and his cousin, Benjamin Bunny. It also includes Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle and Mrs. Tittlemouse.

When Peter Rabbit goes adventuring in Mr. MacGregor's garden and loses his new jacket, how will he get it back?

I play Mrs. Tittle-Mouse, Mrs. Rabbit, Flopsy Rabbit (Peter's sister), and a cat that only speaks cat-talk, for some reason.

All voices and songs are performed live by me and fellow puppeteers Ben
Burris and Amy Escobar. We use a variety of puppet styles including
Japanese
Bunraku-style and rod puppets to tell and sing this British tale.

The script and songs were written by Jean Enticknap and V. Kay Pedersen. Jean also directed this lively production.

This show is recommended for ages 3 and up.

It's spring, and that means the networks are deciding what TV shows will be renewed for next season.

One of the shows "on the bubble," meaning it hasn't been canceled outright, but it COULD be, is Fox's delightful "The Grinder." This show is smart, funny, and fun, but has gotten criminally low ratings all season.

The series stars Rob Lowe as Dean Sanderson Jr, an actor who has just finished a long run playing a lawyer on a TV show, also called "The Grinder." With no show, he returns to Idaho to be near his father (William Devane, in his best role) and brother Stewart (Fred Savage, all growed up).

Dean Sr and Stewart run a law firm, and Dean Jr decides his experience playing a lawyer make him qualified to practice law. However, he can't stop being dramatic.

Very, very dramatic.

Excessively dramatic.

Every episode features clips from Dean's TV shows (usually "The Grinder," but we've seen an early gig on a sitcom as well) shot in a different appropriate style.

There are also fun guest star shots, such as Jason Alexander as Dean's old director, Timothy Olyphant as himself, playing the replacement for The Grinder (Dean's character), Maya Rudolph as Dean's therapist/girlfriend, and Richard Schiff, from "The West Wing," as The Grinder's boss on the show-within-the-show.

Also, of course, the writing is fantastic. It doesn't take itself seriously, and it respects the intelligence of its audience. It lampoons actors and acting, TV shows in general and law shows in particular, and all your favorite TV tropes.

Oh, and Jake Kasdan is a producer (as is Rob Lowe). Like, produced "Freaks and Geeks" and wrote "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" Jake Kasdan! Son of Lawrence Kasdan Jake Kasdan! That guy!

"The Grinder" (the show you and I can watch) airs Tuesdays at 9:30/8:30c on Fox. It plays this upcoming week on April 12. Watch it.

Write the network about how much you loved it (using positive terms, never threats). Play all the clips and episodes on the website. Vote for it at saveourshows.usatoday.com.
Hello, I'm Gina Wilhelm, Seattle Actress!

Right now I'm in tech rehearsals for my new puppet show, "Merry Chris Mouse," which opens on Wednesday. Public shows start this weekend, and run every weekend until Christmas throughout Seattle and Bellevue. This sweet show features skilled tabletop puppetry and a song that would later by sung by The Lovemongers (the group made of Ann and Nancy Wilson from Heart, Sue Ennis, and Frank Cox)!

While performing that, I'm also in the final rehearsals for "Brother Coyote and Sister Fox," another puppet show, which we will be touring to the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta, Georgia, in January. This will be my third trip to the Center, and my fourth tour with Thistle Theatre. I'm very excited!

In my spare time, I continue to study tap dance and voice as well as work on various side projects. I even have a murder mystery dinner coming up in a couple of weeks!

Stay tuned to this site to find out more about "Merry Chris Mouse" tickets and get more updates on my projects!

The popular fairy tale is set in the English countryside with all the puppets dressed in traditional English costumes. Our version is based on Benjamin Tabart's 1807 The History of Jack and the Bean Stalk.

When Jack sells the family cow for some magic beans, it leads to an adventure above the clouds with a Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum giant, a cyclops, a hen that lays golden eggs, and a magic harp.

In addition to the characters you remember, the story includes a green fairy, a butcher, and a merry fool.

I
play Jack's mother, the green fairy, the giant's wife, the hen that lays golden eggs, and the magic harp.

All voices and songs are performed live by me and fellow puppeteers Ben
Burris and Andre Nelson. We use a variety of puppet styles including
Japanese
Bunraku-style puppets to tell and sing this take on the
traditional tale.

This
week marks the opening of "Baba Yaga and the Bag of Gold." This is our fall show, marking the beginning of our performing season. Shows will be presented throughout the Puget Sound.

This puppet play is a Russian wonder tale telling the story of Ivan, his older sister Vasilisa, and their quest to save their family's gold from the witch Baba Yaga.

This is the same Baba Yaga that some of you may know from "Pictures at an Exhibition," and yes, the hut on chicken (or fowl) legs DOES make an appearance in this play. It even dances.

I play Vasilisa, Ivan's smart older sister; Baba Yaga's cat; Mika, a mouse; and Baba Yaga in one of her more attractive forms.

All voices are performed live by me and fellow puppeteers Ben
Burris and Zane Exactly. We use
Japanese
Bunraku-style and black light puppets to tell our story.

The script was written by Jean Enticknap with music by Michael Flint. Jean also directed this lively production.

This show is recommended for ages 3 and up.

This play has scares and laughs, and clever animals! Don't miss our fun, exciting show!

I had the pleasure of attending "Little Shop of Horrors" at ACT (A Contemporary Theatre), a co-production with the 5th Avenue Theatre.

The show was done with the usual level quality one expects from ACT and 5th Ave, full of great singing and acting, clever lighting and sets, and expert direction.

However, the treat for me was taking a backstage tour with Audrey II puppeteer Eric Esteb.

Eric showed me (and my mom, also a puppeteer) all four puppets used in the show. The final puppet was under a drape, but we did get to look at its back.

The third puppet, which is the one used in "Feed Me" was in full view, and I even go to feel it.

Eric graciously told us his favorite part of the show (eating people), and how that works.

He told us about the technical aspects of operating the two larger plants. I had thought he got to leave the stage when the plant is more "dormant," but that was not the case, and in fact, he's on stage for all of act II.

The puppets used for this production are based on the original puppets designed by Sesame Street performer Martin P. Robinson (who is probably best known for performing Telly Monster), though are made from lighter weight materials than were available in 1982.

Eric also revealed that the largest Audrey II puppet was too large to fit in the rehearsal space, so rehearsals with that puppet occurred in another room

He also would rehearse one-on-one with that puppet with Ekello J. Harrid, Jr., who voices the killer plant. The effort showed, as their lip synch was very good.

After looking at the puppets, Eric and Jason (a stagehand whose last name I sadly didn't get) graciously showed us the area under the stage.

There are several set pieces moved in through trap doors on hydraulic lifts, and Jason's job is to raise and lower them using a console that looks, as Eric put it, like the inside of the Tardis.

These lifts also facilitate a few entrances and several exits, and it was very neat to see.

I am grateful to both of them for letting us see the inner backstage workings of this terrific show.

When you go to the show, check out Eric's curtain call. Quite possibly the best curtain call I've ever seen.

When he isn't acting, singing, or puppeteering, Eric is an aerialist whose work can be seen at TheInnamorati.com.

"Little Shop" runs at ACT in the Falls Theater (700 Union St., Seattle), and tickets are $29 to $74 and can be purchased at 206-292-7676 or acttheatre.org.

The show runs until June 15, so there's still time to catch it.
This week marks the opening of "The Tales of Peter Rabbit." This is the beautiful puppet show we presented in tour in Atlanta, Georgia, last September, now presented for our local audiences in Seattle!

This puppet play tells the
stories of some of Beatrix Potter's most beloved characters. The main
stories are those of Peter Rabbit and his cousin, Benjamin Bunny. It
also includes Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle and Mrs. Tittlemouse.

When Peter Rabbit goes adventuring in Mr. MacGregor's garden and loses his new jacket, how will he get it back?

I play Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, Benjamin Bunny, Flopsy Rabbit (Peter's sister), and a mouse without a name.

All voices and songs are performed live by me and fellow puppeteers Ben
Burris and Heidi Persson. We use a variety of puppet styles including
Japanese
Bunraku-style and rod puppets to tell and sing this British tale.

The script and songs were written by Jean Enticknap and V. Kay Pedersen. Jean also directed this lively production.

This show is recommended for ages 3 and up.

This play has scares and laughs, and bunnies galore! Don't miss our fun, beautiful show!
