Penélope Cruz was nominated for a 2010 Goya award. The Goya awards are considered the Spanish Oscar.

Cruz was nominated for a best actress award for her role in Pedro Almodóvar's "Broken Embraces."

The winners will be announced February 14 in Madrid. Nominees were chosen from 120 eligible Spanish films and Latin films released in Spain.

Although there is nearly a month until the Academy Award nominations are announced, the Los Angeles Times is trying to figure out who the nominees and winners of the actress awards will be.

Newcomers Carey Mulligan of "An Education" and Gabourey Sidibe of "Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire" are both top contenders.

Both young women have already gotten nominations for National Board of Review, Screen Actors Guild, and Critics Choice Movie Awards.

Other less sure bets are Abbie Cornish of "Bright Star," Emily Blunt from "The Young Victoria," and Mo'Nique, also from "Precious."

Oddly enough, 15-year-old Saoirse Ronan of "The Lovely Bones" is among the vets, having been nominated two years ago for "Atonement."

Other veterans who have a good shot at hearing their names on February 2 include Meryl Streep for her role as Julia Child in "Julie & Julia" or for her turn in "It's Complicated."

Also likely candidates are Helen Mirren in "The Last Station," Sandra Bullock for "The Blind Side," and Penélope Cruz and Marion Cotillard from "Nine."

Penélope Cruz says that she nearly fainted with shock when she received her award at this year's Oscar ceremony and doesn't remember what happened.

Cruz won for her performance in "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," but says she nearly passed out from the tension of the event.

"I feel frustrated that I can't remember....I felt I was on the border of passing out from tension. That I can remember very well," she explains.

She does, however, remember eating roughly 300 canapes, crying for a half-hour, and being confused about what was going on.

Almodovar directed Cruz in "Volver," for which she received a Best Actress nomination.

Almodovar wants to be careful not to repeat any of Cruz's earlier hairstyles. He says he really enjoys "reinventing her."

To that end, he's having the Spanish actress go blonde.

However, she won't dye her hair. Instead, she'll wear a wig.

Kate Winslet's march to the Oscars continues. The 33-year-0ld actress won a Bafta award for best lead actress for her work in "The Reader."

She had also been nominated for a lead actress award for "Revolutionary Road."

This is the sixth award she has won for her performance in "The Reader."

Other winners at the Baftas included Penélope Cruz for "Vicky Cristina Barcelona."

"Slumdog Millionaire," "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," Heath Ledger, and "The Wrestler" also picked up Bafta awards.

The National Society of Film Critics handed out their annual awards on Saturday, January 3, 2009. Hanna Schygulla took away the best actress prize for her work in "Edge of Heaven."

The society has two rounds of voting. Penélope Cruz, who is originally from Madrid, had won in the first round of voting for her work in "Vicky Cristina Barcelona." In the first round, Schygulla had come in fourth.

Interestingly, Eve, the "girl" robot in "Wall-E," also received a vote for best actress.
